New surgery time

We just found out that Nate's surgery will be at 8:20 tomorrow morning. We'll be reporting to the hospital at 6:50 and praying that everything will go as planned.

Now, deja vu back to the pre-surgery regime: Three baths with a chlorhexidine (antiseptic) soap; one now, one at bedtime and another in the morning. Fasting starts at midnight with no fluids after 4 am. So, as long as we can distract him when he wakes up and during the bath, hopefully he won't be too sad about not getting any milk to drink. Yesterday, in the same scenario, he kept asking for milk, and doing sign language for 'milk', and I just had to keep telling him the milk was all gone. Never felt like such an uncaring mommy!! He's just too young to understand why this is all happening!

We've had a quiet day today, staying here at our hotel, and going for a few walks. Nice and sunny in Edmonton!

Dr. Rebeyka is not even close to finishing, so surgery is a no-go. We are now happily giving Nate milk and breakfast/lunch/snack or whatever you call it. I'd give him absolutely ANYTHING he wanted if he could tell me.

I totally can understand why this happens, and honestly, am thankful Nate won't follow this long and fatiguing adult case. My thoughts are with the family.

Right now, they say Nate's surgery will be on Friday - no details yet.

Thanks for sticking through this with us - we feel so surrounded by your love!

Won't my mom be surprised when she arrives here later this evening!! Nate will able to greet her here in our room!!

Still waiting...

Dr. Rebeyka is still in surgery with his first case. Not looking good for him to complete it anytime soon. Nate's a trooper, but we're told they have to make the call by 3. Poor little guy needs to eat!

All done at PAC

We just got back from the hospital. Nate was a different boy after waking up from his sedation and finally getting some food in him. An hour into his ultrasound, he actually woke up, and they still hadn't taken all the pictures they wanted to. Complex heart = lots of pictures required for the study. Don held him and we gave him some milk, so they took a few more pics while he held Nate.

I wasn't aware of this, but surgeons and cardiologists from several different centres (including Nate's - Dr. Soni) actually do another video conference this afternoon, before surgery tomorrow.

We have a late surgery time, 2:40pm, Dr. Rebeyka's second of the day. It means another day of fasting, but understandable since surgeries that require use of the bypass machine are always the first of the day, and it sounded like his first was a lengthy and complex case.

They expect Nate's OR time to be 3 hours, which includes the time it takes to get the lines in once he is under general.

PAC so far...

This will be short, but here's a little update on our PreAdmission Clinic day. We've seen most of the people we needed to. Right now Nate is sedated and having his ultrasound. He has struggled and been upset for every test and new person he has seen. Don't blame him though - there's some not fun stuff he's had to do! The staff here are great, though! When talking to his surgeon this am., he said he had a "big, big, big, big, case tomorrow before Nate". He is expecting that one to go well, but said there is a chance of delaying Nate's.
More later when I have a real keyboard!
